Baralai had mentioned something about needing to relax, so Paine had expected him to answer the door with a book in hand, not wielding an eight-inch knife.
"It's soothing," he explained, walking into the kitchen. "After a long day, I come home and take out my frustrations on some vegetables." He handed her another knife. "Here, you try."
Paine tested the edge on her prey: a carrot. "Strange, using one of these on something that doesn't fight back."
He laughed and reached for an onion. They chopped in companionable silence as the comforting smell of stewing meat filled the air.
