Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? About the number of stories I would expect, but way, way more words. Credit FFEX and especially Mega Flare for that one.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January? FFXIII, definitely. Given my past track record with adopting new fandoms, I could never, in a million years, have guessed that I'd jump into writing fic before even finishing the game.
Star Trek qualifies as well, and the unpublished crossover (which, even though I didn't finish it, I made enough progress on that I feel it's fair to count in this category).
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest? "Reconcilable Differences", so much. I am so proud of how that came together, that I was able to take an ambitious story and make it work, under the gun of a deadline.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? Explicit sex. The porn battle stories, and especially "Study Break", which is the first explicit M/M scene I've ever written. I learned first of all that I am capable of the hardcore stuff if I put my mind to it, and thanks to renay's beta, I have more thoughts on making sex scenes more immediate, less soft-focus.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year? How ridiculous is it that "Finish Aftermath" is still at the head of this list? Also finishing that unpublished crossover, and the Alphabet Fic meme, which is well over a year old now, and clear out other WIPs as well. I'm doing getyourwordsout again as well, but I'll talk about that, and other goals, more in my 2010 monthly writing goals wrap-up post.
From my past year of writing, what was...
My best story of this year: I don't usually like to pick this for myself, but I'm tentatively going to say "Reconcilable Differences".
My most popular story of this year: In terms of hit count, definitely "Exchange"; in terms of reviews, maybe also "Exchange", or "Trustworthy"
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: "Far Across the Sand and the Sea" -- this suffered, I think, by being a long story posted after FFEX and just as all this summer's Big Bangs were getting started.
Most fun story to write: "To Get to the Other Side", no contest.
Story with the single sexiest moment: Either "Study Break" or "Reconcilable Differences".
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Hmm, I can't really think of one that qualifies. Especially not the "even for you" part, since I don't tend to write particularly out-there or twisted stuff.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: "Human Resources" and especially Differences. I feel like I have a much richer, more rounded perception of Al-Cid now.
Hardest story to write: Aftermath, geez. Although it's had a few breakthrough moments as well.
Biggest Disappointment: Not finishing the Alice/Pirates crossover. I started really strong out of the gate on that one, but now I'm to the "pulling teeth" stage.
Biggest Surprise: It's not so much that I wrote FFXIII, or that I wrote explicit M/M, or that I wrote pairing fic for characters that never even appear in a scene together. It's that I wrote all of that into the same story.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story: Probably the "Reconcilable Differences" happy ending.
In conclusion: I'm closing out my most prolific year in a long time, and it feels great. I really, really hope that I can keep it rolling into 2011. Wish me luck.
