Edge of Tomorrow

T and I saw it today, and we both really liked it. Not a perfect movie by any means, but in most respects, it was better than I expected it to be. From the trailer, I had thought it would be a dark, brooding, by-the-numbers action sci-fi, but the tone was much lighter. It replicates the experience of playing a video game better than any other movie I've seen -- and I mean that in a good way. And there were some fun trope subversions that we enjoyed a lot.

Until the endgame (literally, the boss battle), where everything suddenly got much more formulaic, and there was tacked-on happy ending that was so cliche, I literally rolled my eyes. Not so terribly that I rescind the recommendation, but it was a little disappointing, as if the filmmakers saw that they might manage to do something unusual and backed away from it for their Hollywood ending.
